Forest Cathedral

"Forest Cathedral" was inspired by a Vancouver Art Gallery exhibition, honouring the old growth trees and forests of British Columbia. The Government of France sponsored the exhibition in hopes of preventing further destruction to our old growth trees and forests. In France, groups of trees are referred to as "Cathedrals." The young conifers of this painting are derived from those found on Mount Belcher, Salt Spring Island (where I was living when "Forest Cathedral" was painted.) The area has been logged several times, and no old growth trees remain standing.

"Forest Cathedral" is on display at the Whatcom Museum, Lightcatcher Building, now until September 18, 2011.
